NGO Programme Karnataka/Tamil Nadu (SDC-IC NGO Programme Karnataka/Tamil Nadu)

Key message: Sustainable natural resource management with special emphasis on the socially/economically marginalised (eg. women, dalits, Adivasi).

Description
The overall project goal is to assist resource poor rural households in managing natural resources to improve their livelihoods in a sustainable way. The main objective in this last phase is to consolidate the various activities pursued by the partner NGOs in such a way that these activities are completed smoothly, become self-sustaining, or can be continued satisfactorily with other funding. Activities are guided by four key principles: Innovation (development of diverse and location specific interventions, farmer-led technologies); Self-reliance (promotion of community-based, sustainable development); Strong people's institutions (formation and strengthening of community-based people's organisations); and Equity (addressing gender issues and the needs of the resource poor, landless and other socially disadvantaged groups in order to achieve and sustain equity in managing and sharing natural resources). NRM activities centre on the sustainable use and conservation of water on rain-fed lands, and the strengthening of the relevant people’s institutions. The project also places particular emphasis on documentation of experiences and lessons learned. Capacity building is a crosscutting theme in all these areas of intervention.
