NRMPO (Indo-Swiss Natural Resources Management Programme Orissa)

Key message: Working with government and NGOs at policy & programme level respectively to improve livestock and NRM based livelihood of Adivasi/rural poor in Orissa, India.

Description
Indo-Swiss NRM Program Orissa (IS-NRMPO) started in 1991 as a bilateral project under the name Indo-Swiss Project Orissa (ISPO). The current fifth phase has three independent components, for which the responsibility for implementation was vested with the respective partners:

  • Livestock component in partnership with AHD

  • Dairy component in partnership with GGGMU

  • NGO program, implemented by eight NGOs.

In the NRMPO program, SDC's focus on Poverty alleviation and Empowerment of the poor women and men is addressed in the two distinguished thrusts, each addressing the target population through different approaches:
Livestock Service Delivery (LSD) addresses the rural livestock holders of the entire state of Orissa in an in-direct way, by working at policy level with focus on improved livestock service delivery.
Livelihood and Community Organization (LCO) addresses tribal communities in the Ganjam and Gajapati districts directly with the help of local NGOs. It focuses on improvement of livelihood and contributes to the process of empowerment.
Linkages between the two thrusts are pursued through livestock activities as part of the interventions addressing livelihood in the LCO program and by involving the NGOs who are the partners in the LCO thrust in the pilot activities on alternative service delivery.
